Abstract | This series of books brings together for the first time the materials for a history of American art. Heretofore there have been attempts to narrate some special period or feature of our artistic development, but the narrative has never been consecutive or conclusive. The present volumes begin with colonial times, and carry the record down to the year 1904. They are intended to cover the graphic, the plastic, the illustrative, the architectural, the musical, and the dramatic arts, and to recite the results in each department historically and critically. In this "History of American Music," the second of the series, the author has told of the beginnings, the foreign influences, the changes, the methods, the personal endeavors, that have gone to the making of our present music. |
